Vs. originally appeared in October 1993 as Pearl Jam's second album, recorded under heavy pressure after the unexpected success of Ten. The band went for a rawer, shorter approach: 'Go', 'Animal' and 'Blood' tear past, while 'Daughter', 'Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town' and the closing 'Indifference' are held back. 'W.M.A.' deals with police violence, 'Glorified G' with gun ownership. In its first five days it sold almost 950,000 copies, a sales record that stood for five years, and the album spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. 'Daughter' became the biggest hit and led the Mainstream Rock chart for eight weeks.
