Facelift is the debut album by Alice In Chains, originally released in 1990 on Columbia and produced by Dave Jerden. The album still sits close to late-eighties metal, with heavy riffs from Jerry Cantrell, but the two-part vocals of Cantrell and Layne Staley already pointed towards what became the band's signature. 'Man in the Box' broke through on MTV and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance; 'We Die Young', 'Sea of Sorrow', and 'Bleed the Freak' were also released as singles. Facelift was the first album from the Seattle scene to be certified gold by the RIAA and later went multi-platinum.
