Strings, wah-wah guitar and a singer who whispers where he used to shout: The Car, the seventh Arctic Monkeys album, was released on 21 October 2022 through Domino and continues the cinematic direction of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, now with more soul and funk in the arrangements. Alex Turner wrote all ten songs, James Ford produced, and recording took place at Butley Priory in Suffolk, La Frette near Paris and RAK Studios in London. There'd Better Be a Mirrorball and Body Paint led the way as singles. Mojo's John Mulvey called the album the "next logical step on from the cinematic sound world" of its predecessor. It was shortlisted for the 2023 Mercury Prize and entered the UK chart at number 2, behind Taylor Swift's Midnights, ending a run of six consecutive number 1 albums. This edition is an LP.
