With Modern Life Is Rubbish, Blur pushed back against the American grunge that dominated the early 1990s. The second studio album, originally from 1993, deliberately turns to English subjects and English pop history, from the Kinks to the mods. "For Tomorrow" is the pivot: Damon Albarn wrote it after the label asked for a stronger single. Stephen Street produced most of the record. "Chemical World" and "Sunday Sunday" were also released as singles. Sales were modest, but the album laid the groundwork for the Britpop that broke through a year later with Parklife.
