For Abacab, Genesis moved into a studio of their own, The Farm in Surrey, and used it to strip the sound back. The trio wrote everything together on the spot and left behind the lush arrangements of earlier work: tight rhythms, angular guitars, and the hard, bone-dry drum sound Phil Collins had found shortly before on his solo work. The title refers to the shifting order of the sections in the opening track, labelled A, B and C while the song was being written. No Reply At All got a horn part from the Phenix Horns, the section that played with Earth, Wind & Fire, Man On The Corner became the second single, and Who Dunnit? consists of little more than a repeating synthesizer figure and a handful of words. Abacab originally came out in 1981 and reached number 1 in the UK.
