In the spring of 1993 Johnny Cash was briefly without a record deal and cut eleven of his own songs as demos at LSI Studios in Nashville, shortly before he met Rick Rubin. The tapes were shelved. For Songwriter, released on 28 June 2024 through Mercury Nashville, his son John Carter Cash and David 'Fergie' Ferguson stripped the recordings back to voice and acoustic guitar alone and built new backing around them with Marty Stuart, Dan Auerbach, and Vince Gill among others. Waylon Jennings's backing vocals from 1993 were kept. Cash later re-recorded Drive On and Like a Soldier for American Recordings, here they appear in their original form. Metacritic scored the album 77 out of 100 based on nine reviews. This edition is an LP on black and white vinyl.
