Moanin' marked drummer Art Blakey's return to Blue Note and became one of the best-known recordings by his Jazz Messengers. The session took place on 30 October 1958, with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Benny Golson on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt on double bass. The title track, written by Timmons, caught on so strongly that the originally untitled album took its name from it; Golson added 'Along Came Betty' and 'Blues March', two future jazz standards. Blue Note describes the album as 'perhaps the most quintessential hard bop recording of all-time'. This edition is an LP on black vinyl.
