Bashin': The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith was originally released in 1962 as Jimmy Smith's first album for Verve, following a series of albums on Blue Note. On this album, Smith firmly established the Hammond B-3 organ as a solo instrument in jazz. The first side was recorded with a big band for the first time, arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson, with the hit version of Walk on the Wild Side, based on Elmer Bernstein's film music. The second side consisted of trio tracks with Quentin Warren and Donald Bailey. The album cemented the formula of soul jazz.
