The Cult first recorded Electric with producer Steve Brown, under the title Peace. Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy shelved that version and started again in New York, with Rick Rubin behind the desk. The result is stripped-back hard rock: guitar riffs up front, almost no reverb, a rhythm section locked in tight behind Duffy. The band's third studio album originally came out in 1987 and delivered "Love Removal Machine", "Lil' Devil" and "Wild Flower", the songs that broke The Cult in the United States. Their version of Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" fits the same attitude.
