On The Head on the Door, originally released in 1985, The Cure set every side of the band next to each other: the pop lift of 'In Between Days' and 'Close to Me', the flamenco-flavoured guitar of 'The Blood' and the eastern tint of 'Kyoto Song'. Robert Smith wrote all ten songs on his own and produced the album with Dave Allen. Bassist Simon Gallup had returned, and with drummer Boris Williams and guitarist Porl Thompson the group settled into the line-up it would keep for the rest of the decade. The album entered the UK chart at number 7 and was the first by The Cure to break through in the United States as well.
