In January 1972 Aretha Franklin recorded across two evenings at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, with Reverend James Cleveland at the piano and the Southern California Community Choir behind her. Amazing Grace took her back to the gospel she started out with as a child, with Mary, Don't You Weep, How I Got Over, a drawn-out title track and a medley of Precious Lord, Take My Hand and You've Got A Friend. Her father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, addresses the congregation halfway through. With more than two million copies sold in the United States it is the best-selling gospel album ever made. Sydney Pollack filmed the sessions, but that footage only surfaced decades later.
