Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, originally released in 1977 on Asylum Records, is a sprawling double album on which Joni Mitchell largely lets go of her folk roots in favour of jazz, world rhythms and long, free-flowing compositions. The sixteen-minute suite 'Paprika Plains', with its orchestral arrangements and improvisation, sits at the heart of the record. Jaco Pastorius plays fretless bass, while percussion and layered vocals weave through the music. Divisive on release, it later became a much-loved outlier in her catalogue.
