Hejira, originally released in 1976 on Asylum Records, took shape largely during long car journeys across the United States and carries that restlessness in its sound. Joni Mitchell wrote about travel, escape and solitude in long, winding melodic lines with little in the way of conventional choruses. Jaco Pastorius's fretless bass colours tracks such as 'Coyote', 'Refuge of the Roads' and the title song, giving the album a floating, jazz-tinged feel. It is regarded as one of the most personal and literary works in her catalogue.
